Dear Yulia,

We are back home from Sunday evening and I wanted to tell you that we are very satisfied of our stay in Caucasus and in Moscow too. Everyday was sunny, Viktor was a nice, efficent and very attentive guide, Nina was a very good cook, and the stay in the barrels with Gallia was pleasant too. And we had very good conditions to climb to the summmit of the Elbrus. We did not have any problem, either with planes, luggage, equipment, transportation or weather.
Sincerely yours
Elisabeth

Would like to know what skis best used for climbing Elbrus. Light touring (e.g fischer xtreme 165cm ), or normal skis (Atomic Nomads - 170cm). My height is 177cm and weigh 75kg

Both skis is possible to use!
When I used to climb up I always happy to use light touring skis
(actually that is my selection!!), but when I used to ski down I always dream about big and wide normal skis!!!.
But I saw a good few skiers who preferred to use normal skis for
climbing Elbrus (like Bandit 2xxx or 3xxx  e.g.)  — they are stronger
than me I suppose :)
So the final decision is very personal.
I was very much impressed seeing last springtime new touring skis K2 that seems to meet both requirements : they are VERY light but are big and solid
enough to enjoy skiing down .
Please tell us if you need more info about our trips to Elbrus. Our
standard tours you can find on our web site

Dear Yulia,
Just a quick note to let you know we had a very pleasant trip in Caucasus. The scenery is fabulous, the organisation went very well despite our missed flight the first day.
Viktor has been very nice and professional.
So thank you and Nicolai for organising this trip.
I'll tell my friends about Top Sport and hopefully they will want to come next year.
As far as i'm concerned, I would be interested in skiing in Tien Shan or Kamtchaka another time!
Best regards,
Jean-Marie

Irina,

sorry for taking so long to get back to you. things have been a little hectic since our return. just wanted you to know that the trip was fantastic and I was very pleased with how everything worked out. We made the west summit and skied from the saddle. It was a great experience. We loved Nick and he did a great job of taking care of us. I will wholeheartedly recommend Top Sport Travel to anyone interested in exploring the Caususes.

Best of luck with business and life.

Hello!
The final part of our trip was much more successful then arrival, there was no problems with baggage and other unpleasant surprises.
Anyway thank you for your treatment so exquisite that we had in St. Peter. The appearance of a «protective angel» Konstantin Gradusof in the airport of St Peter made everything much more easy: first, processing the reclamation for the loosen baggage, later in Toksovo trying by all possible means to find material to be able to participate, we didn't have rubles but he lent us money, he always accompanied us, he worried about us and finally, although not all dared, we could participate in the race, with a material not very competent but we could give a turn for the circuit. A 10 points for Konstantin and another for Yulia. THANK YOU.

Other thing, the Toksovo ski marathon.
A test that we saw in Internet gave us the sensation of a test of the level of other Euroloppet but unfortunately in live it was not the same thing. The landscape was beautiful but the quality of the layout and the organization could improve, it is not normally for a marathon to give two turns in a circuit, it was programmed as a circuit of 53 Kms with provisioning each 10 Km aprox. But in the reality it was not exactly this way, a single small provisioning on the 8 Kms and another in the arrival.
All this must to be improved because the area is very attractive and ideal for these races.

Grateful for everything, and charmed with the city of San-Petersburgo, it is a marvelous.
We will return.

>> Hello! Please give me some advice about what kind >> of boots to use under the race!

I participated only once in the race at 1990 . That year race had the biggest number of participants. Mainly they used usual climbing boots — e.g. I ran in Koflach boots with light Saleva Messner crampons on. Anatoly Bukreev (the winner, with 1h 47 min from Refuge 11 till East Summit) used light leather trekking looking like (but still climbing) boots with some kind of very light and fragile crampons on. 2 mountain runners from USA (do not remember names, 2-nd and 7??-th result) used specially disigned for them NIKE boots, wich looked like running shoes with spikes. But on automn 1990 there were plenty of ice on Elbrus slopes!!! So for sure the choice of running boots will depend considerably on snow/ice condition of slope!!! I can imaging running/walking with no crampons till saddle as it was during last race.

Surely making the choice of shoes one should remember that Elbrus is not a just big stadium but a Big Mountain despite its rather easy slopes.

Bonjour a toute l'equipe TST,

Philippe Zucchini - France - Nice

Hello TST team,

Few words to thank you about the PERFECT organization of this 2 weeks trip (April 1st-16th 2005) in Caucasus mountains (Ullutau - Elbruz - Bezinghi) for a back-country ski tour.
Big thanks also to Victor and Alexey (guides) who shared with us their love for these Caucasus mountains and the ski...
An unforgettable trip in isolated valleys, where we made our own daily ski tracks on sublime slopes, in (traditional) ski or telemark.
Unforgettable recollection, also, about Nina's welcome in Ullautau and her tasty and typical meals.

Ullutau : really well adapted to backcountry ski.
Bezinghi : More Alpinism oriented. However some beautiful slopes to ride, despite some flat «start» on huge glaciers. Sauna is working, do not miss it.

I'll come back, do not know when, but I'll come back for sure...

Dear Mr Shustrov
We are tourists from the UK who stayed in Adyr-Su valley (Caucasus) last spring.
We have a comment regarding one of your local ski-touring guides - Mr Viktor Komarichev.
This Christmas he visited us in the UK. We offered him to stay longer, found him a job, promissed full board accomodation, love and care, but he would not stay.
He went back to the Caucasus to train and get fit for the coming ski-touring season work with the words: na chto mene vasha Anglia bez ski-tura...
He is a really amazing person and good Guide.
So, please do not forget to send him congratulation with his birthday - 20th January!
Thank you in anticipation.
